Model-Theoretic Semantics as Structural Semantics*
In spite of its impressive empirical track record over more than three decades, Model-Theoretic Semantics2 (MTS) of natural language has been persistently under attack from two opposed directions: from one direction, various kinds of ‘Cognitivists’ such as Jackendoff (1983, 2002) and Lakoff (1987) argue that its commitment to Realism render MTS irrelevant or even antithetical to the goals of na...
متن کاملA Model-Theoretic Reconstruction of Type-Theoretic Semantics for Anaphora
I present an analysis of the interpretation of anaphora that takes concepts from type-theoretic semantics, in particular the use of the Σ and Π dependent type constructors, and incorporates them into a model-theoretic framework. The analysis makes use of (parametrically) polymorphic lexical entries. The key ideas are that, in the simplest case, eventualities can play the role that proof objects...
متن کاملA Model Theoretic Semantics for Ontology Versioning
We show that the Semantic Web needs a formal semantics for the various kinds of links between ontologies and other documents. We provide a model theoretic semantics that takes into account ontology extension and ontology versioning. Since the Web is the product of a diverse community, as opposed to a single agent, this semantics accommodates different viewpoints by having different entailment r...
متن کاملA Model-Theoretic Semantics for Defeasible Logic
Defeasible logic is an efficient logic for defeasible reasoning. It is defined through a proof theory and, until now, has had no model theory. In this paper a model-theoretic semantics is given for defeasible logic. The logic is sound and complete with respect to the semantics. We also briefly outline how this approach extends to a wide range of defeasible logics.
متن کاملPosition paper: Proof-Theoretic Semantics as a viable alternative to Model-Theoretic Semantics for natural language
This paper is a response to the last question in the CFP, about alternatives to model-theoretic semantics (MTS). I do not present any specific results, just argue for proof-theoretic semantics (PTS) as such an alternative. PTS is well-established within Logic (e.g., [8]). See [11] for an overview. I have extended PTS to fragments of English. The paper has two parts: 1. a brief exposition of PTS...
